# Liverpool: Fans praise Joe Gomez despite falling to first-leg defeat against Atletico Madrid

**Plenty of Liverpool fans loved the performance of Joe Gomez during their side’s [1-0](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51533273) defeat against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.**

The Reds failed to have a shot on target as they fell to their first defeat since away loss to [Napoli](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/365002-jurgen-klopp-reaction-napoli-liverpool) in November. Saul Niguez’s fourth-minute strike ensured that the hosts had the advantage going into the second leg of the last-16 tie at Anfield. With a performance that saw a [lack of quality](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51533273) in the final third and with no bite in midfield, there was a silver lining from the evening in the form of Gomez.

The England international, who is valued at £31.5m by [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/profil/spieler/256178), impressed the Kop faithful with his defensive duties, as well as his dominance and composure with the opposition constantly snapping at his heels all evening. The 22-year-old won 10 duels out of 18 attempted, made two interceptions, completed 11 long balls from 15 and had a pass success rate of 86%, as per [Sofascore](https://www.sofascore.com/liverpool-atletico-madrid/UsLgb). As a result, supporters applauded Gomez’s efforts with one fan saying that he was the man of the match, while another described him as a monster as he emerges into a top centre-back.
