# Liverpool: Fans react to reports that Georginio Wijnaldum is likely to extend his contract at Anfield

**Plenty of Liverpool fans have been reacting to reports that [Georginio Wijnaldum](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/liverpool-fc-transfer-rumours/liverpool-fans-discuss-james-pearce-update-on-gini-wijnaldum-contract-situation/) is likely to sign a contract extension at Anfield, despite recent speculation about a potential exit from the club.**

The Dutch midfielder, who is valued at £36m by [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/georginio-wijnaldum/profil/spieler/49499), has been [heavily linked with a move to Barcelona](https://talksport.com/football/748646/barcelona-liverpool-star-georginio-wijnaldum-ronald-koeman-wishlist/) in recent weeks, with his former national team coach Ronald Koeman newly-installed in the Camp Nou dugout; and the 29-year-old has allowed his Anfield contract to enter its final year with [no sign of penning a new deal](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/gini-wijnaldum-contract-liverpool-transfer-18766456).

However, journalist Kevin Palmer has tweeted (via [@RealKevinPalmer](https://twitter.com/RealKevinPalmer/status/1305998171194224640)) that Barcelona will need to sell before they can make new signings, with Dutch media claiming that Wijnaldum has had a change of heart about wanting a move to La Liga and is now likely to extend his contract at Liverpool.

There had been reports that the midfielder [could have been offloaded](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/liverpool-fund-thiago-bid-three-sales-warnock-wijnaldum/13i8mplo2kerx1ulkyrt275ba2) in order to raise funds to sign major transfer target Thiago Alcantara, whom the Reds have been [tracking for several months](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/liverpool-fc-transfer-rumours/liverpool-fans-react-thiago-transfer-update-kaveh-solhekol/) but are no closer to purchasing.

Rumours of a likely contract extension for Wijnaldum drew a mixed reaction from these Liverpool fans on Twitter – some want the midfielder, who [scored twice](https://www.si.com/soccer/2019/05/07/liverpool-barcelona-champions-league-video-highlights-messi-suarez-mane) in the 4-0 win over Barcelona last year, to stay at the club; whereas others seem disappointed that the possibility of signing [11-time league champion](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/thiago/erfolge/spieler/60444) Thiago could now fade:
