The 29-year-old is entering the final 18 months on his contract, which is due to expire in June 2021, as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/georginio-wijnaldum/profil/spieler/49499).

Manager Jurgen Klopp has renewed several first-team players’ deals, with the Holland international one of a few whose future remains uncertain.

The former Newcastle United man will be available to leave the club for free at the end of his deal if his contract situation is not rectified, and [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/1506303/2020/01/06/ornstein-on-monday-city-eye-matvyenko-and-skriniar-with-winks-an-option-for-both-manchester-clubs-var-will-not-be-scaled-back/?source=shared-article) revealed that he has strong admirers in both Italy and Spain.

In a similar situation, the German tactician convinced [James Milner](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7790193/James-Milner-signs-new-one-year-contract-extension-Liverpool-stop-veteran-leaving-free.html) to remain on Merseyside, as well as extending his own contract until the end of the [2023/24](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7789155/Jurgen-Klopp-signs-new-Liverpool-contract-2024.html) season.

Supporters were not buying Ornstein’s latest report and made their feelings clear on social media.

> Wijnaldum will be the same as Milner. He’s arguably the most trusted midfielder and no one else does his role as good as him. No chance we sell him.
