# Liverpool fans react to Rooney’s comments on the Gerrard, Scholes or Lampard debate

**For some period of time, there has been a debate amongst football fans as to which English midfielder of the golden generation was superior for their country. Paul Scholes was slightly different in that he wasn’t so much as a goalscorer, although he could pull the trigger from distance, his game was based more on controlling the tempo and using his vision to play some mesmeric passes. Frank Lampard was most renown for his late runs into the box, reflected by him breaking the record for most Chelsea goals (211). Whereas Steven Gerrard was the most combative of the lot, combining a goal-scoring prowess with the passing and tackling capabilities that arguably made him the most complete. Prior to his last England game last night, in an interview with *[SkySports](https://twitter.com/SkyFootball/status/1063102142406410243)*, Wayne Rooney was asked who was the best player he played with for England and his answer has certainly appealed to Liverpool fans.**

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the reactions to the comment.

A handful of Liverpool fans felt it was the obvious decision.

A couple of fans weren’t too sure why Scholes was included in the conversation.

> Scholes could not tackle as Gerrard overall game as better. You would not see Scholes running back and tracking back to made a tackle at left back. Plus Steven always had to carry Liverpool we’re as Scholes never for united

> I don't understand how Scholes is even in the debate… Gerrard the best, Lampard not far off, but Scholes, while still a very good player, isn't close to their level
