# Liverpool: Fans salute Michael Edwards over proposed deal for Loris Karius

**Many Liverpool fans have been raving about the club’s sporting director Michael Edwards following reports of an impending deal for Loris Karius.**

Turkish media outlet [Fanatik](https://www.fanatik.com.tr/besiktas-transfer-haberi-4-taksitle-loris-karius-haber-fotograf-2103270-2) reported yesterday that Besiktas, the club to whom the goalkeeper is currently on loan, are close to agreeing an €8m (£6.84m) move to sign him permanently, with the fee to be paid in four equal instalments over a four-year period.

Karius, who cost Liverpool £4.7m ([The Independent](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/loris-karius-signs-liverpool-goalkeeper-transfer-news-a7046946.html)) in 2016, was [loaned out to the Istanbul-based club](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/313594-loris-karius-besiktas-loan) in summer 2018 following an [error-strewn performance](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/44258022) in that year’s Champions League final and mistakes in pre-season games against [Tranmere](https://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2018/0710/977810-klopp-rallies-behind-karius-after-pre-season-blunder/) and [Borussia Dortmund](https://metro.co.uk/2018/07/22/liverpool-fans-worry-loris-karius-makes-mistake-four-minutes-borussia-dortmund-7746854/?ito=cbshare).

Edwards has been [Liverpool’s sporting director since November 2016](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/michael-edwards), in which time they have extracted tremendous value from a few transfers.

Andrew Robertson was signed from Hull for £10m in 2017 (as per [BBC](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/40666486)) and the man described as the [world’s best left-back by Phil Neville](https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/teams/scotland/scotland-and-liverpool-ace-andy-robertson-best-left-back-in-the-world-says-neville-1-4886956) made the [PFA Team of the Year](https://www.thepfa.com/news/2019/4/25/premier-league-team-of-the-year) in 2018/19, having claimed [13 assists last season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andrew-robertson/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/234803) and [22 in total](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andrew-robertson/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/234803) during his time at Anfield.

In terms of outgoings, Liverpool have managed to extract £19m ([BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/46763610)) from Bournemouth for Dominic Solanke, who scored [one goal in 27 Reds appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dominic-solanke/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/258889), and £20m ([The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2018/08/09/danny-ings-completes-20m-southampton-move/)) from Southampton for Danny Ings, whose injury-ravaged Anfield career ended with [four goals in 25 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/danny-ings/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/134294).

The combined income from those two sales is greater than the £34m (as per [BBC](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/40345138)) spent on Mohamed Salah in 2017, with the Egyptian scoring [80 goals in 121 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mohamed-salah/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/148455) for the Reds so far.

These Liverpool fans hailed Edwards for what they perceive to be another astute transfer:

> They couldnt pay his wages last season. I think they even tried to cancel his loan. Edward has some how got 8m out of them & got karius to agree. Master class. Could have easily been a sit out your contract on different loans & go back to germany on a free.
