# Liverpool: Fans slam Gini Wijnaldum after Graeme Souness criticism

**A number of Liverpool fans have been calling for Gini Wijnaldum to leave the club this summer, agreeing with comments made by Reds legend Graeme Souness.**

The Dutchman [arrived](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36846756) at Anfield from Newcastle United back in 2016 and has become a stalwart for the Merseyside giants. Wijnaldum has gone on to make [230 appearances](https://www.lfchistory.net/Players/Player/Profile/1310) to date, winning both the Champions League and Premier League among other [trophies](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/georginio-wijnaldum/erfolge/spieler/49499).

The 30-year-old has been a key figure in Liverpool’s midfield, often not making the headlines but proving to be an [influential performer](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/33568/History/Georginio-Wijnaldum) for the Reds. He has scored some big goals in his time at Anfield, including the [opener against Middlesbrough](https://www.espnfc.us/club/liverpool/364/blog/post/3131140/wijnaldum-coutinho-and-lallana-send-liverpool-to-champions-league) on the final day of the 2016/17 league season as Jurgen Klopp’s side secured a top four finish, as well as a brace in the [epic 4-0 Champions League win](https://www.si.com/soccer/2019/05/07/liverpool-barcelona-champions-league-video-highlights-messi-suarez-mane) over Barcelona two years later.

Wijnaldum’s Liverpool future remains up in the air, however, with his [£90,000-per-week](https://www.spotrac.com/epl/liverpool-fc/payroll/) contract [expiring](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/georginio-wijnaldum/profil/spieler/49499) at the end of the season and Barcelona constantly [linked](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/georginio-wijnaldum-liverpool-contract-future-23330238) with a move for him.

Someone who has been critical of him is Souness, with the former Reds captain writing in [The Times](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/if-manchester-united-buy-harry-kane-or-erling-haaland-they-can-close-the-gap-to-city-and-become-real-title-contenders-next-season-s90gk56cp) about how speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future could potentially be having a negative impact on his teammates. The 67-year-old wrote:

> “Wijnaldum is leaving for Barcelona and I’m not sure how I’d have reacted to a player who made it clear he was off, how that goes down in a dressing-room. The players may make a joke of it, but it also may not sit well with all of them.”
