# Liverpool: Fans slam Steve Nicol’s comments on wanting to sign Kalidou Koulibaly

**Anfield icon Steve Nicol has given his opinion on who he feels should partner Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool’s defence.**

He hasn’t tipped it to be a current player on Jurgen Klopp’s roster, though. Instead, Nicol would like to see his former side swoop for major money target Kalidou Koulibaly.

Speaking to ESPN (relayed via [@AnfieldEdition](https://twitter.com/AnfieldEdition/status/1294235571607539712)), the Scot said: “If I had a wish list then I would wish that Koulibaly would be sat next to Virgil van Dijk.”

The Senegalese centre-half has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time, with the club even submitting an official £54m bid for his services. However, Napoli rejected the offer and value him at a much higher price of £90m (via [The Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1299077/Liverpool-news-54m-transfer-bid-Kalidou-Koulibaly-Jurgen-Klopp-demands-deal-gossip)).

Joe Gomez has become a solid partner for van Dijk, with the two working well to help keep 13 clean sheets in the Premier League last season (via [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/leistungsdaten/spieler/256178)).

However, despite Liverpool’s recent interest in Koulibaly, many fans disagree with Nicol’s call. One supporter has said they would ‘rather have Gomez’ as they clearly value the 23-year-old more and don’t want to see the club splurge on a man [linked with Manchester City.](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league/manchester-city/manchester-city-fans-implore-club-to-sign-napoli-defender-kalidou-koulibaly/)
