Van Dijk’s goal for Liverpool in the [4-1 win over Norwich](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/139208/plus/0/saison/2019/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/31) on the opening day of the Premier League season was his [fifth in the league since the beginning of last season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/139208).

The first of those came in a [2-0 win at Wolves](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/139208/plus/0/saison/2018/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/31) last December, followed by a [brace in the 5-0 hammering of Watford](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/139208/plus/0/saison/2018/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/31) in February and one in the Reds’ [3-2 success at Newcastle](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/139208/plus/0/saison/2018/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/31) towards the end of the campaign.

The [Netherlands centre-back](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/profil/spieler/139208) has also provided [two league assists for Jurgen Klopp’s team](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/139208), which came in [3-1 and 2-0 wins over Burnley and Chelsea](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/139208/plus/0/saison/2018/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/31) respectively.

Manchester United winger Lingard has [yet to contribute to a goal this season](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/109000/History/Jesse-Lingard), though, and managed just [four goals and two assists in the 2018/19 Premier League](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/109000/History/Jesse-Lingard).

Remarkably, all four of those goals came in an [18-day spell during last December](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jesse-lingard/alletore/spieler/141660), [one of them against Liverpool](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jesse-lingard/alletore/spieler/141660), and the 26-year-old hasn’t found the net in the league since his [double against Cardiff](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jesse-lingard/alletore/spieler/141660) eight months ago.

These Liverpool fans on Twitter took the opportunity to taunt Lingard over his inferior goal record to Reds defender van Dijk:

> Not a fair comparison. Lingard is only a youngster. He’s a great prospect, just needs time.

> Definitely a fair comparison especially when u factor in the fact that all of lingards goals and assists came in December 2018 and one since or before
