Alberto Aquilani’s transfer to Liverpool was one that just didn’t work out in any way.
The Reds paid £20m for the Italian, who came into replace Xabi Alonso who had just made the switch to Real Madrid. He came from AS Roma with a good reputation after 149 matches with the Giallorossi, but he was never able to make a real impression at Anfield. Injuries dogged him throughout his spell at the club, and he would end up making just 28 appearances in all competitions before departing.
James Pearce has put together an article on the former Red, and he spoke to an unnamed member of the club’s recruitment staff under Rafa Benitez at the time. He said that David Silva was also on the club’s radar at the time, but he just wasn’t affordable. As such, they made their move for Aquilani instead.
What would you have rather happened?
Kept Xabi Alonso
Signed David Silva

We could’ve got David Silva but he was too expensive…Aquilani should’ve been too expensive but we got a discount because the guy was midway through a long term injury….how shambolic can you get, those owners have blood on their hands https://t.co/HKfcCXZCde

This is what I love about FSG and Klopp now, look at the Fekir deal for example. We don’t have to spend silly money on the chance of a player being good after injury.
