Liverpool have previously ‘looked at’ a deal to bring Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez to the Premier League, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

The Lowdown: Revamp expected

Jurgen Klopp is expected to undergo a central midfield revamp in the summer and has already been linked with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Matheus Nunes, but another target has emerged in the form of the 25-year-old Mexico international.

Alvarez was a standout performer for his side at the World Cup in Qatar, and his performances in the tournament appear to have caught the eye of a trio of potential suitors from the top flight.

The Latest: Liverpool considered Alvarez

According to Jacobs (via CaughtOffside), Liverpool and Arsenal have both formerly considered a move for Alvarez, but FSG already made up their minds.

“Edson Alvarez is another name who could be on the move this summer.

“Arsenal considered Alvarez in January to a degree, but it became quickly clear Ajax didn’t want to do mid-season business. Liverpool have looked at Alvarez before and chose not to proceed and Newcastle are another club to have him at least loosely on their radar.”

The Verdict: Go for it...

Liverpool’s reasoning for not pursuing Alvarez is unknown, but should the opportunity to sign him arise at the end of the season, the hierarchy should act quickly to get a deal wrapped up.

The Adidas-sponsored star currently averages 2.4 tackles and the same number of clearances per game in the Eredivisie, and ranks in the 99th percentile for most aerial duels won every 90 minutes by midfielders across Europe.

Dubbed ‘charismatic’ and 'tenacious' by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Alvarez can also operate at centre-back which will be an attractive attribute to Klopp, making this a no-brainer of a move to add a serious injection of bite and versatility into a struggling midfield.
