Former Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has urged manager Jurgen Klopp to reward Georginio Wijnaldum with a new contract at Anfield.
Kirkland urges Klopp to do the right thing
Wijnaldum’s £75,000-a-week (Spotrac) contract ends once the 2020/21 campaign comes to a close (TransferMarkt), but he has been part of the Anfield fabric since his £25m move from Newcastle back in 2016.
From 199 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side, the 62-cap star has scored 19 goals and provided 16 assists, which included a memorable brace as the Reds beat Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield on route to their Champions League triumph in Madrid.
Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Reds shot-stopper Kirkland had his say on the Dutchman’s uncertain future.
Asked if they should tie Wijnaldum down to a new contract, Kirkland said: “Yeah I would. I’d keep him, you need someone like him.
“There will be a lot of clubs after him because he is a goalscoring midfielder, and I don’t think there’s anyone else who runs further on the pitch than him.
“So yeah, I’d love to see him stay. I think he’s done really really well since he’s been at Liverpool. He’s had a big impact, he’s scored goals, great lad, the energy he brings to the team. I’d be disappointed if he left, I really would be.”
Transfer Tavern take
Taking into account his versatility and his combination of skills, Klopp has described Wijnaldum as the “perfect” midfielder, acknowledging his importance for the team (via the club’s official website).
And many Liverpool fans will be echoing the words of Kirkland on the subject of Wijnaldum. Having been relegated with Newcastle in 2016, Klopp brought him to Anfield and turned him into a Champions League and a Premier League winner.
For the effort that he has put in and what he has achieved with the Merseysiders, the Dutchman deserves to be rewarded with a new deal.
That being said, the longer that this predicament goes on, the less likely it looks that he will commit his future to Liverpool.
