Liverpool: James Pearce impressed with Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino in win over Ajax - Liverpool News

Liverpool managed to overcome Ajax in their first Champions League game of the season and journalist James Pearce was impressed by the performances of Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino.

Pearce impressed with Klopp duo

In what looked like a premeditated move by manager Jurgen Klopp, the forward trio of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were all substituted on the hour mark for Jota, Minamino and Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Reds got over the line on the night after a crazy own goal from Nicolas Tagliafico before half-time, but with the Merseysiders currently festooned with injuries, the visitors were forced to experiment during the second half at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

How many points did Liverpool finish the 2019/20 season on?

After putting in solid performances, both Jota and Minamino may have given Klopp a selection headache moving forward which could pose a serious threat to the Reds’ regular front three.

Responding to a question from a fan during The Athletic’s Q&A session at full-time, Pearce was quick to acknowledge the efforts of Liverpool’s attacking duo and was pleased with what he saw.

“It’s certainly a talking point,” he said. “I thought Jota was outstanding when he came on – so positive and direct. Same with Minamino. I’d really like to see Minamino start through the middle at the weekend.”

Big statement

If Klopp thought that he had enough to ponder at this moment, both Jota and Minamino have added to that. Firmino has come under criticism in recent weeks due to his lack of goals and either player has the ability to take his place if the Brazilian’s slump in form continues.

Despite getting two assists to his name against Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively, Firmino is still yet to score a goal in competitive action and has not found the net since the night the Reds lifted the Premier League trophy at the end of last season.

Klopp has some serious thinking to do for this next league game against Sheffield United. With the Blades having a slow start to the season, the German’s tactical tests and trials could be set to continue.

In other news, pundit was left stunned by ‘ridiculous” Liverpool development.
