Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp 'can't rely on' Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, and the likelihood is they are sold this summer, according to talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The Lowdown: Defensive issues

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has missed the last seven games through a hamstring injury, meaning Gomez and Matip have received increased game time, both starting away at Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend.

However, things have not gone well in Van Dijk's absence, with reporter James Pearce branding Matip as 'shaky' and 'so slow' in the 3-0 defeat at Molineux, a game in which he also scored an own-goal.

The Latest: Agbonlahor reacts

Speaking to Football Insider in the wake of the Reds' heavy defeat against Wolves, Agbonlahor said:

“I don’t think either of them are good enough. Gomez has been poor for a long, long time now. Matip has some good games but can be really bad in others.

“Konate and Van Dijk are clearly the strongest pair but they have a lot of injury problems between them.

“That will be a worry for Jurgen Klopp. They can’t rely on Matip and Gomez to cover.

“I don’t see anything but them being sold in the summer window.”

The Verdict: Time to go?

There is no doubt that Liverpool's defence has been an issue this season, conceding 30 goals, the joint-eighth highest total in the Premier League, and their Cameroonian defender has looked very poor at times, receiving a 5.7 Sofascore rating after a dismal display against Brighton.

Gomez has also been criticised for his performances this season, being branded 'terrifying' by Spanish journalist Victor Dieguez in the defeat at Nottingham Forest, but he is still just 25, and there is still plenty of time to rectify his disappointing form.

If the Reds are to part with a centre-back in the summer, they should allow Matip to leave, given that he is now playing second fiddle to Ibrahima Konate, who has won more aerials, interceptions and tackles per 90 than the former Schalke man in the past year.
