Liverpool: Jose Enrique welcomes Jordan Henderson’s return from injury

Liverpool: Jose Enrique welcomes Jordan Henderson’s return from injury -Liverpool News

Liverpool have received ‘great news’ with Jordan Henderson’s return from injury, in the words of former Reds defender Jose Enrique.

The lowdown

The club captain hasn’t played for the Reds since the 2-1 win over Newcastle United at the end of August, during which he was forced off with a hamstring injury.

He missed the team’s first two Champions League group matches, as well as the Merseyside derby in the Premier League.

However, having been called up to the England squad to replace the injured Kalvin Phillips, the 32-year-old made a late substitute appearance in his country’s 3-3 draw against Germany on Monday night.

The latest

Enrique took to Twitter to welcome Henderson’s comeback and suggested that the skipper could be able to play a full part in Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Rangers next week.

Sharing a photo of the midfielder coming on for Jude Bellingham last night, the Spaniard tweeted: “Great news Reds, Hendo is back. Maybe this week [he’ll have] to play a little bit because [he] still need[s] to get his fitness back but for the game after I believe he will be ready to go.”

The verdict

Liverpool’s match against Brighton on Saturday kickstarts a breathless run of 13 matches in six weeks (or 42 days) leading up to the World Cup in November. It’s a stretch of fixtures which could well force Jurgen Klopp to use the full extent of his squad, rotating players to manage fatigue.

The return of Henderson is particularly timely with that in mind, and the captain can be expected to play a heavy part over the autumn period. Indeed, he has started four of the Reds’ five league matches of the season before he sustained his injury.

The £140,000-per-week stalwart has been labelled ‘dynamic’ and ‘selfless’ by BBC pundit Karen Carney, while team-mate Virgil van Dijk has called him a ‘terrific captain and a ‘terrific leader’.

Given Liverpool’s plethora of midfield injuries in recent weeks, it’s no wonder that Enrique has described Henderson’s return to action as ‘great news’ for Kopites.
