Liverpool have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Kalidou Koulibaly as Paris Saint-Germain are out of the race for his signature, according to Le Parisien.
The Reds have been continually linked with a move for the Senegal international in recent weeks and the Ligue 1 champions were also mentioned as potential suitors.
However, the French media outlet claimed that PSG will not be making a move for the 28-year-old, at whom Napoli are said to value between €50m (£44.8m) and €70m (£62.8m).
There is no doubt that the French club were the Reds’ main challengers for the centre-back. After all, they can offer trophies, guaranteed Champions League football and a significant wage packet (as per Transfermarkt).
However, their removal from the race for Koulibaly seemingly puts the Anfield outfit firmly in pole position. Manchester United have also been linked but their Champions League prospects are far from secure – they are currently in the Europa League and sit in fifth place in the Premier League table. From a sporting point of view, they cannot compete with their fierce rivals.
Would you like to sign Koulibaly?
£62.8m is still a lot to spend on a 28-year-old but there is no doubting Koulibaly’s quality – for example, he has averaged a WhoScored rating of over seven in every full season he has spent in Serie A. Partnering him with Virgil van Dijk could be a mouth-watering proposal – now, they have a far better chance of doing just that.
