Journalist Paul Brown has claimed that Liverpool are a 'dark horse' to sign Youri Tielemans on a free transfer in the summer.

The Lowdown: Premier League battle

The likes of Newcastle United, Manchester United and Arsenal are reportedly looking at signing Tielemans, either in the January transfer window or in the summer.

His contract at Leicester City expires at the end of the season, meaning that he can leave for a cut-price in January, or as a free agent as he prepares to represent Belgium at the World Cup.

The Latest: Liverpool a 'dark horse'

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Brown has claimed that Jurgen Klopp's side are a 'dark horse' in the race to sign Tielemans for free at the end of the campaign:

“A dark horse to watch out for here his Liverpool. I would not be surprised at all if we saw Liverpool make a move for Tielemans as a free agent.”

The Verdict: Get it done

The Reds have been consistently linked with a big-money move for Borussia Dortmund and England star Jude Bellingham, but signing Tielemans would save them a lot of cash while also helping to solve their midfield problems.

Naby Keita, Arthur Melo and James Milner have all been on the treatment table this week, while the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson have received criticism for some of their performances this season.

Lauded as ‘one of Europe’s top midfielders’ by Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers, Tielemans ranks in the 88th percentile for tackles and 83rd for passes attempted and blocks for midfielders in Europe's top five leagues over the last year (FBRef).

Given that he is only 25 years of age, and of course has Premier League experience, signing him on a free would be a smart, low-risk move by the Reds, should they be able to beat off the competition for his signature.
