Liverpool: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain backed to join Manchester United

Liverpool: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain backed to join Manchester United -Liverpool News

Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain should make a shock move to rivals Manchester United this summer, according to former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny.

The Lowdown: Ox set to leave

The midfielder has fallen way down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp, with arguably as many as seven players now ahead of him in the reckoning in his position.

Oxlade-Chamberlain didn’t play a single minute of action after March last season, with too many of his performances flattering to deceive as the campaign went on.

The 28-year-old is out of contract at Liverpool next year, and given his squad status, it looks as though he will be sold during this summer’s transfer window.

The Latest: Kenny backs United move

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been linked with a controversial move to United, and speaking to Football Insider, Kenny, 44, talked up the idea of it happening:

“He’s a player who hasn’t played much in the last couple of seasons. If Man United are the only club interested and that’s the only possible move for him then I don’t see why not.

“I think the Ox will want to get out there and play more regularly. Obviously, that isn’t going to happen at Liverpool. Man United would be a good move for him if they can get that one done.

“I will say it again, they are in the position where if any club with Champions League football comes in for him, he will join them instead. There is a rivalry between Liverpool and Man United but not in terms of challenging for the Premier League.”

The Verdict: Surely not?

While Oxlade-Chamberlain’s time at Liverpool will surely end this summer, it would be an almighty shock if he traded the Reds for their most bitter rivals.

The Englishman will be aware of the animosity that exists between the two clubs and you would like to think he respects Liverpool far too much to tarnish his reputation in such a way.

United aren’t playing Champions League football next season, so there isn’t the lure of that for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who should instead join a different Premier League team to try and put himself back in the England reckoning.

He has been a good servant for Liverpool overall, being described as ‘spectacular’ by Klopp, but his time at Anfield has reached its natural conclusion and he should now look to become a key player elsewhere.
