Former Tottenham and England striker Darren Bent believes that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp should start Diogo Jota ahead of Roberto Firmino against Manchester City today.
Jota over Firmino
The 23-year-old has started off his Anfield career with a bang, scoring a stunning hat-trick during their 5-0 victory away to Atalanta in the Champions League earlier this week.
Assistant manager Pep Ljinders previously admitted that he had been watching the Portuguese forward for some time, describing him as a “pressing monster” and the sort of player that fits perfectly into Jurgen Klopp’s system (cited by JOE).
Speaking to talkSPORT, Bent believes that Klopp should rest Firmino and allow Jota to start their crucial Premier League clash this afternoon.
“My front three would be Mane, Salah, Jota, Jota’s got to play,” he said.
“It’s unfortunate for Firmino that he’s not scoring many goals. So you’ve got to take him out but this is the first time generally that this front three has really been pushed. Because it’s always been Firmino, Salah and Mane – when they’re fit they play.
“Origi has come in and scored some big goals for them in big games. Shaqiri has come in a little bit and done quite well but seriously, Jota has gone in there – goals, goals, goals, assists, goals.
“He’s genuinely pushed them, you’ve got to ride that wave. If you are scoring goal after goal after goal then you’ve got to play him.”
Transfer Tavern take
Bent raises some good points – Jota has made an immediate impact while Firmino has got off to a slow start. His hat-trick the other night will have been enough to give Klopp the sort of managerial headaches that every boss would want.
Today’s game is a huge test for the Reds. Not only because of the way they’ve started in contrast to the Citizens, but it could be interesting without the presence of Virgil van Dijk in their defensive quartet.
It would not be a bad idea to start Jota. But Klopp could turn to Firmino and possibly bring Jota off the bench during the latter stages of the game.
In other news, Liverpool fans were left stunned by latest player development.
