Liverpool had a very tight decision go against them in their 1-1 draw to Brighton at the weekend even before the controversial late penalty. Mohamed Salah had the ball in the back of the net in the first half, but after careful deliberation, VAR judged it to be offside.
Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey spoke to The Transfer Tavern about this key moment, and he believes that the wrong outcome was reached.
Halsey on Salah’s disallowed goal
Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Halsey said: “With Mane’s disallowed goal on Saturday (at Brighton), you can clearly see, he’s offside, even with the naked eye on the first replay, you can see he’s offside, no problem.
“With the Salah one, they looked at it, and they looked at it and they looked at it, they kept moving the lines to justify an offside decision. If they’re taking that long, it’s a goal!”
Liverpool have every right to be frustrated
Huge decisions went against Liverpool at the Amex, with a fair few definitely being right ones. However, key moments like the Salah offside and the final Brighton penalty are still being discussed. This emphasises that the decision could have gone either way and so the Reds and Jurgen Klopp will rightly still feel aggrieved.
Halsey’s point on how long it took to decide the goal is offside is one of the main reasons supporters are frustrated with VAR. It’s beginning to feel like the officials are trying too hard to find reasons to intervene with VAR, rather than using it as a safety net.
