Many Liverpool fans disagreed with points made by ex-Reds’ defender Glen Johnson on his former side’s transfer strategy this month.
The Englishman told Sky Sports that any defender that comes through the door in January will be “third, fourth or even fifth choice,” but added that more bodies at the back are needed.
Jurgen Klopp is currently going through a major injury crisis at the back. Both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been ruled out for a significant amount of time due to serious knee injuries.
Also, Joel Matip continues to struggle with his own fitness issues. This has left Liverpool with no established centre-backs to choose from, with captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho filling in at the back for their past two Premier League games.
Do you think Liverpool will sign a new centre-back during this January window?
With this in mind, supporters disagreed and urged Johnson that their problems are more severe than he believes, making their feeling clear to @AnfieldEdition on Twitter.
“Wide of the mark there. Gomez and Matip have train wreck injury records and there is no other senior CB since Lovren left”
“Not true! Shirts there to be won.”
“Don’t agree. Any new CB will be 2nd choice as most of the time Gomez and Matip will be out injured even after 8 months.”
“Look at past when we have more choice at Defender like Klavan, Lovren, Caulker, Coates. It‘s not a problem, it’s all for the sake of depth in the team.”
“Biggest myth going… Gomez hasn’t/wasn’t great this calendar year….can we upgrade on him absolutely IMO…so the notion that any player comes in and doesn’t stand a chance of starting alongside VVD is total fabricated”
“Glen Johnson obviously doesn’t follow Liverpool because if he did he’d know that VVD (ironically injured now) is the only 1st team CB who is reliable. We sold Lovren, and neither Gomez nor Matip can string 5 games together. Whoever LFC buy will be an immediate first choice.”
