Some Liverpool supporters have hailed Joel Matip's assured performance in the Reds' 2-2 draw at home to Manchester City on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp's side were involved in a thrilling Premier League clash at Anfield, eventually leaving with a share of the spoils. Sadio Mane fired Liverpool in front after a superb team move, only for Phil Foden to make it 1-1 with a well-taken finish of his own.

The Reds went ahead again when Mohamed Salah scored a memorable solo effort before Kevin De Bruyne's deflected strike completed the scoring.

There were a number of great performances on the day, from Salah to Foden, but someone who caught the eye in more understated fashion was Matip.

The centre-back has enjoyed an excellent start to the season and he was strong once again on Sunday, striding out with the ball, enjoying a 91% pass completion rate and defending well, making four interceptions and three successful tackles.

"It's slightly hollow on the back of the Brentford game and the deflection. But it feels like the first time that Joel Matip plays like he believes he should be starting for Liverpool every week. Integral part of the team now and clear first not-van Dijk CB on the team sheet."
