Many Liverpool fans were raging about the fact that defender Joel Matip missed Jurgen Klopp's starting line-up for their crunch clash against Manchester United.

The Reds have struggled fitness-wise at the back all season, mainly due to the fact that both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been ruled out for a significant amount of time due to serious knee injuries.

Matip has struggled all season to stay fit and it was a race against time to be 100% ready for this afternoon's table-topping encounter to recover from his adductor knock, but ultimately was not deemed ready by manager Jurgen Klopp.

For the second Premier League game running, Liverpool will start the game with no centre-backs - Jordan Henderson and Fabinho deputising in a makeshift back four alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

Understandably, supporters were livid about the situation and have urged the club to buy some defensive reinforcements in January.

"Matip should be sold. If a player isn't available most weeks then there's no point of having them at the club. Top player when he plays but it's irrelevant because he rarely does, even when Liverpool need him most. No way the very best players miss games like this over niggles."
