Many Liverpool fans have been reacting after the news emerged of exactly why Sir Alex Ferguson did not sign Reds captain Jordan Henderson when he was at Old Trafford.
A panel was formed in aid of Sports United Against Dementia featuring Jurgen Klopp, Sir Kenny Dalglish and Ferguson himself, with the latter speaking about how he nearly took the 30-year-old to Old Trafford.
Cited by Sky Sports, the Scot admitted that a bid was being prepared and even spoke to Steve Bruce who was his manager at the time – but was tempted away from him due to his medical team being unhappy with his running style, which allegedly could have lead to injuries.
It seems that Liverpool’s arch-rivals ultimately missed out, as Henderson has gone on to win the two biggest trophies in club football, the Champions League and the Premier League, in the space of 13 months.
Who is the better Liverpool captain?
As a result, supporters gloated in light of Sir Alex’s reveal when The Athletic’s James Pearce shared the comments on Twitter (via @JamesPearceLFC).
Fans revel over Henderson at the expense of Sir Alex
“They missed out. Our captain”
“United’s loss. Delighted we got him.”
“I’m glad Fergie has put that straight. Let’s not forget it took quite some time for our fan base to appreciate what he brings to our club. I’m delighted we stuck with him; a good vice under Stevie and has more than filled the big boots he left behind.”
“Utd’s goat manager wanted to sign Hendo. That’s all the ammo I need.”
“Game, set and match LFC. Fergie probably saw how their embarrassing fanbase took things he said out of context and wanted to clear the matter, either way we benefited from you not buying him mate thanks for “being ready to bid” though”
