Well-respected journalist James Pearce has stuck by Liverpool duo Takumi Minamino and Neco Williams following their 1-1 draw against Brighton yesterday.
Pearce defends duo
Both players featured during what was a controversial encounter, with the Reds having two goals chalked off and conceding a last-gasp penalty due to VAR.
Williams was heavily scrutinised during the game for his first-half display, while Minamino was slammed during his side’s 2-0 victory against FC Midtjylland earlier in the season, and he has yet to really hit the ground running since his £7.25m move from RB Salzburg last season.
Replying to a fan during The Athletic’s Q&A session after the game, Pearce leapt to the defence of both players and is confident they will bounce back in the next few weeks.
“Let’s keep things in perspective,” he said, “Minamino hasn’t had much game time and he was thrown into a contest where a lot of team-mates around him performed below par. I wouldn’t write him off.
“As for Neco, he’s 19. All young players go through ups and downs. He’s still learning his trade and he’s been thrown in at the deep end as a result of Trent’s injury. He will come again.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
Pearce is spot on here. While both players may not be performing at the level that the segments of the Reds’ faithful may like, they must be given time to gain a bit of momentum in the team.
Both players have not had regular first-team football, and have been in and out of the team depending on injuries, scheduling and rotation.
Williams and Minamino deserve the chance to impress, and Jurgen Klopp will likely honour that as his team are going through their catastrophic injury crisis.
