Liverpool signing RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer in 2023 would be a ‘really good move’, according to Sky Sports pundit Kevin Campbell.

The Lowdown: Melo alternative

The Premier League giants haven’t had much luck with injuries this season, and with loanee Arthur Melo sidelined for an unknown period of time, they are making a new central midfield addition a priority for the upcoming winter market.

The Austrian has entered the final eight months of his contract with Marco Rose’s side, and having not yet put pen to paper on a new deal, the Reds are in with a shot of landing him on the cheap, amid recent reports that he is a 'candidate' for a possible move to Anfield in 2023.

The Latest: Liverpool backed to sign Laimer

Asked by Football Insider whether Liverpool could secure a cut-price deal for Laimer in the New Year, Campbell said: “That is a deal they could get over the line in January.

“Liverpool have to look at their injury list. It has really hampered them. They cannot rely on certain players to be fit.

“Liverpool fans have been going crazy since the summer about a centre-midfielder. They want more bodies in.

“There is a realisation now that they need more in there. Laimer could be a really good move for them.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

Liverpool potentially signing Laimer on a free transfer would be an absolute bargain, and if the opportunity were to arise, then FSG should get it done as soon as possible.

Labelled an ‘unsung hero’ by journalist Josh Bunting, the 25-year-old has made 29 goal contributions (18 assists and 11 goals) during his time at Leipzig and is averaging 1.8 dribbles per Bundesliga game.

Midfield is an area where Liverpool have been particularly light on goals, while only Luis Diaz can match the Austrian's dribbling average among all the players at Anfield.

Laimer has a creative spark that Jurgen Klopp would surely love in the middle of the park, but with multiple other clubs likely alert to his contract situation, the Reds will probably need to act fast if they want to beat their fellow competitors to the 25-year-old's signature.
