Liverpool: Insider says Reds have scouted Matheus Nunes -Follow up

Liverpool could make a move for Sporting CP star Matheus Nunes to help ease their current midfield injury crisis, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Midfield crisis for Reds

Jurgen Klopp’s side may have drawn 2-2 at Fulham in their Premier League opener last weekend but a hamstring injury to Thiago was arguably even more of a blow than the result.

The Spaniard joins the likes of Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the sidelines currently, in what is proving to be a big issue in the middle of the park.

James Pearce says the former Bayern Munich star could miss six weeks and it has surely heightened the need for Liverpool to sign a new midfielder.

The Latest: Nunes to Anfield?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones claimed that Nunes is a possibility this month, confirming Julian Ward and Co have scouted the player already:

“There’s Matheus Nunes at Sporting. That’s one to look out for if they do go into the market. He would be a good fit. I know that Liverpool have got some scouting reports on him made up already.

“He’s the perfect profile that they would normally look for in a signing. I’m not convinced that they will go ahead with this before deadline day, it might just be one that they’ve got on the back burner, but it’s probably a name to look out for if they do.”

The Verdict: Signing is imperative now

Before the injuries, there wasn’t a great need for Liverpool to bring in a midfielder, with Klopp having a host of options and a potential move for Jude Bellingham in 2023 making the most sense.

Things have changed now, however, with Thiago’s injury-prone nature again proving to be an issue, and even fit players such as Fabinho and Jordan Henderson not looking at their best.

Nunes could be the perfect man to give Liverpool’s midfield a much-needed injection of youth and vibrancy, having been hailed as ‘unbelievable’ by former teammate Goncalo Santos, not to mention winning eight caps for a strong Portugal team.
