Amid Thursday’s celebrations after Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions, Phil Thompson had some thoughts on the current squad.
Spearheaded by manager Jurgen Klopp and captain Jordan Henderson, the Reds have won their first league title in 30 years. Along with the ecstasy of winning the trophy, Liverpool have also set a new record for how fast the Premier League has been wrapped up (via ESPN), confirmed as champions with seven matches still to play.
Is Virgil van Dijk the best defender Liverpool has ever had?
Speaking to Sky Sports following Chelsea’s win over Manchester City, Thompson lauded Virgil van Dijk as one of the side’s standout performers this season.
“This guy is the best centre-back in world football,” the former Reds defender said. “He is absolutely incredible. Tell me what he can’t do – he is everything.”
The Dutchman signed for the club in 2017 from Southampton for a club record of £75m (via BBC Sport), and since his arrival he has transformed Liverpool’s defence. Van Dijk has contributed to 14 clean sheets in the league this season and has won a total of 201 duels and 157 headers. He is also in the top 10 for total clearances made throughout the 2019/20 campaign (via Premier League).
Liverpool are now reigning Champions League holders, Club World Cup and Super Cup winners as well as Premier League champions. It’s be a phenomenal 12 months for the team; now they are just waiting on finally lifting that trophy at Anfield.
