The champions of England will make the journey to the Etihad tonight to face the side they snatched the Premier League crown from.
Liverpool are gearing up to take on former league champions Manchester City for the final time this season. To fans’ delight, Pep Guardiola’s side will award the Reds a guard of honour as they make their way out onto the pitch this evening.
Who will win tonight?
The Merseyside outfit have already wrapped up the 2019/20 season and could arguably start resting up key players. However, given the rivalry that has stemmed between these two sides over the years, Jurgen Klopp may see an opportunity to rub a last bit of salt into City’s wounds.
Transfer Tavern has predicted how Liverpool will line up against the Citizens…
No changes are likely to be made from the side that ran out 4-0 winners over a helpless Crystal Palace last month, with the only injuries being to second string players Joel Matip, James Milner and Xherdan Shaqiri- all three of whom should miss the trip to the Etihad.
This is arguably Liverpool’s strongest XI and one that has helped get the Reds where they are today.
Fabinho will help cover the defence as City will more than likely try to attack as much as possible to at least have the pride of a home win. His deeper position could allowed Jordan Henderson to chip in with the attack. A goal or assist from the skipper would be a fairy tale for Liverpool fans. Meanwhile, Georginio Wijnaldum should retain his place in the middle of the park, despite both Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain being available.
Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott will feature on the bench and will maybe get some game-time in the second half. But the usual forward three should cause City some problems, particularly as they will still have their loss to Chelsea on their minds.
Mohamed Salah is currently fourth in the race for this season’s Golden Boot on 17 goals (via BBC Sport). A brace against Guardiola’s side this evening will put the Egyptian at the top of the table, ahead of both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Jamie Vardy.
City would need to drop nine further points in order to be in trouble of not finishing in the top four. But they can almost count on the fact Liverpool will not be taking it easy on them.
