Hugely exciting Liverpool youngster Ben Doak is on the verge of signing a new deal at Anfield, according to an update from journalist David Lynch.

The Lowdown: Doak shines on Liverpool debut

The Scottish gem, who celebrates his 17th birthday today, is seen as one of the top young players at the Reds' academy, producing some outstanding performances from out wide and scoring four goals in six UEFA Youth League games this season.

On Wednesday night, Doak made his senior Liverpool debut in the Carabao Cup clash against Derby County, producing a lively showing as a second-half substitute.

The Scot's reputation has grown further after his eye-catching cameo, and it now looks as though he is set to commit his future to the Reds.

The Latest: New deal expected

Taking to Twitter, Lynch claimed that Doak will sign his first professional deal with Liverpool this week.

The journalist tweeted:

"Liverpool youngster Ben Doak set to cap a memorable week by signing his first professional contract with the club."

The Verdict: Massive Reds prospect

It is easy to get carried away about young players at Liverpool, with so many ultimately not making the grade, but Doak does seem to have something special about him.

At just 16, there was a fearlessness about his performance against Derby - he has been hailed as 'fantastic' by his former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou - with his pace, trickery and unpredictability making him a nightmare for opposition defenders.

It may take some time before he is a genuine fixture in the Liverpool first-team squad, but the early signs are hugely promising, and nailing down his future would be a big positive step.
