Liverpool have penned Diogo Jota to a new five-year contract and Sky Sports presenter and broadcaster Nubaid Haroon is full of praise for the move.
The Lowdown: Jota signs new deal
The Portuguese star hit the ground running as soon as he joined the Reds from Wolves in 2020, proving to be a potent part of arguably Europe’s best attack.
The Latest: Excellent business
Sky Sports discussed the new deal live on their Transfer Talk show with presenters Haroon and Michael Bridge, and the former had some pretty exciting words about the deal.
“It’s a brilliant way to get players to perform,” the reporter said, calling Jota “absolutely outstanding”.
He continued: “It’s a great way to get players to continually perform over and over again, you always have this incentive. He had three years on his deal, so for most clubs they probably run that to the final year then offer a new contract.
“Liverpool have said ‘you’ve been that good, we’re going to offer you a fresh contract’.
“You’d imagine more money, and you’ll probably have another incentive to get the next one and the next one, that’s how you get the best out of players.”
The Verdict: No-brainer for Reds
Jota has almost become a forgotten man at Liverpool in some ways, given the signings of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, and the fact that his form tailed off towards the end of last season. His last goal for Klopp’s men came at Manchester City back in April.
The Portugal international is a top-class footballer who is a killer in the penalty area, however, popping up with so many important goals in tight games for the Reds over the past two years.
It is, therefore, a no-brainer to lock up him for a further five years, and Haroon’s comments exactly how well the club is being run at the moment.
