There is still a chance that Liverpool could sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the summer transfer window, transfer insider Dean Jones has claimed.

The Lowdown: De Jong's summer saga

The Dutchman's future has been one of the biggest talking points of the summer, with Manchester United continually showing an interest in signing him.

De Jong seemingly wants to stay put at Barca, although that hasn't stopped Liverpool rumours from emerging, as Jurgen Klopp's midfield ranks seem to get thinner with each passing week.

With deadline day fast approaching, Reds fans will be praying Julian Ward can get a new midfield player over the line, and one well informed onlooker is offering some hope...

The Latest: Liverpool move not ruled out

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones claimed that the Reds could yet beat United to De Jong's signing, even if it is far from nailed on:

"For him to leave, someone would have to offer him something very special.

"Now, maybe that’s a club like Liverpool. If Liverpool did pitch to him, then you could imagine why he might suddenly go for that as a better option than going to Manchester United.

"At the moment, him joining Manchester United just doesn’t look to be happening."

The Verdict: Would be perfect, but unlikely

De Jong is an outstanding player who has been hailed as 'extraordinary' by Barca manager Xavi and 'incredible' by Louis van Gaal, with the 25-year-old such a classy individual who can break the lines in key areas, averaging a 94.5% pass completion rate in La Liga so far this season.

He would be a perfect midfield signing for Liverpool this summer, possessing similar attributes to Thiago and giving the Reds the extra dose of composure and creativity that is badly needed.

Unfortunately, any more away from Barca feels increasingly unlikely at this point, but if De Jong suddenly wanted a move to Anfield, Klopp should jump at the chance to snap him up.
