Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez will start the Reds' crucial Premier League clash with Manchester United on Monday evening, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.

The Lowdown: Huge game at Old Trafford

The Reds return to league action on Monday, hoping to bounce back from disappointing successive draws away to Fulham and at home to Crystal Palace.

Jurgen Klopp's men head to Old Trafford to take on a United team without a point to their name so far this season, with confidence at a new low under Erik ten Hag.

Ahead of the game, a key piece of Liverpool team news has emerged.

The Latest: Gomez confirmed to start

Taking to Twitter, injury expert and Sky Sports pundit Ben Dinnery confirmed Klopp's comments that Gomez would start in place of Nat Phillips against United:

"Joe Gomez will start at Old Trafford on Monday night, but the game will come too soon for Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones. Both players are nearing a return."

The Verdict: Correct decision

Phillips struggled against Palace, despite being hailed as 'absolutely insane' by Klopp in the past, not covering himself in glory for Wilfried Zaha's goal and lacking pace alongside Virgil van Dijk.

It does, therefore, make complete sense to bring Gomez in that his expense on Monday evening, with the 25-year-old impressive when he came on last week and partnering Van Dijk during much of the Premier League title-winning season.

This is a great opportunity for Gomez to enjoy a run in the team without Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate fit - the former should be back soon, though - and if he has an extended spell in the side, it could even help him force his way into the England squad for the 2022 World Cup.
