Liverpool have been handed yet another injury blow with the news that Joel Matip could miss the Premier League clash with Crystal Palace at Anfield.

The Lowdown: Injuries racking up

The Reds have a host of injury problems at the start of the 2022/23 season, as Jurgen Klopp has to make do without numerous important figures.

Ibrahima Konate is missing at the back, Thiago has suffered a hamstring issue and Diogo Jota continues to be sidelined, to name just a few of the current absentees.

Liverpool host Palace on Monday evening and they now may have to make do without another influential figure.

The Latest: Matip could miss out

According to the Telegraph's Sam Wallace on Twitter, a groin problem could ruled Matip out of the clash with the Eagles:

"Joel Matip a potential injury absentee for Monday night at Anfield with a groin problem - another on the list for #LFC. Likely to be a first start of the season for Joe Gomez against Crystal Palace."

The Verdict: Big chance for Gomez

This is another big blow for Klopp, especially with Konate also unavailable, but if there's one positive it's that Joe Gomez will be handed an opportunity to shine.

The 25-year-old has experienced cruel luck with injuries over the years but he is an outstanding centre-back when he is fit and firing, with Klopp once describing him as 'a sensational footballer'.

If Gomez plays against Palace and thrives alongside Virgil van Dijk during the title-winning season, he could end up keeping his place, boosting his chances of going to the World Cup with England.
