Liverpool could be willing to allow Joel Matip to leave Anfield at the end of the season if an offer of £15m or more is forthcoming.

The Lowdown: Matip out of form

The Reds are currently enduring a season to forget and the former Cameroon defender has been one of many players who has struggled to find their best form throughout the campaign.

The 31-year-old has been especially poor since the World Cup, being handed 5.22 and 5.19 ratings by WhoScored in the 3-0 defeats to Brighton and Wolves respectively, scoring an own goal in last week's humiliation at Molineux.

Matip's current Liverpool deal expires at the end of next season, so this summer will possibly be the last chance for FSG to receive a fee from his departure.

The Latest: £15m for Matip?

According to Football Insider, the Reds are 'willing' to accept a £15m offer for the defender in the summer, with his future very much 'up in the air'.

The same outlet reported last week that FSG are ready to sell Matip, and it looks as though Jurgen Klopp's patience may have worn thin.

The Verdict: One more year

Matip has undoubtedly been poor in recent months even aside from the own goal at Wolves, with BBC pundit Alan Shearer saying that the 31-year-old had a 'nightmare' overall in that galling defeat.

It is important not to be too knee-jerk, though, and the Cameroonian has still contributed plenty at Liverpool, having won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup among other trophies during his 181 appearances across six-and-a-half years on Merseyside.

Klopp has called Matip a 'world-class' footballer in the past, while Jamie Carragher labelled him a 'huge presence' in the team, and it would make more sense for the Reds to keep him until 2024 and then allow him to leave for free when his contract expires.

Next season he should ideally be viewed as a squad player, with another centre-back hopefully brought in during the summer, but one bad run of form shouldn't see him shipped out too hastily, especially for a fee as low as £15m.
