Liverpool: Fabrizio Romano makes Konrad Laimer claim

Liverpool: Fabrizio Romano makes Konrad Laimer claim -Liverpool News

Liverpool tried to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer before eventually bringing in Arthur from Juventus, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Arthur joins on loan

The Reds haven’t been known for their deadline day transfer business in recent years but they ended up signing the Brazilian on loan just hours before the window closed.

The 26-year-old has been brought in to ease an injury crisis in Liverpool’s midfield and the hope is that he reaches his potential under Jurgen Klopp, having flattered to deceive in Turin.

The Reds were reportedly pursuing numerous other targets, with Laimer’s name in the mix, and a new update has now emerged regarding the Austrian.

The Latest: Liverpool wanted Laimer

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Romano confirmed that Liverpool wanted to bring in the 25-year-old but Leipzig proved to be too stubborn.

The Italian stated:

“He was one of the players they considered, but the real problem is RB Leipzig. We know how German clubs are and it is really difficult to negotiate with German clubs in the final days of the window.

‘They wanted to keep their squad together and didn’t want to change key players of the squad in the final hours.”

The Verdict: Shame for Liverpool

Laimer could have been an ideal midfield addition for Liverpool, excelling in the less glamorous aspects of the game.

The 24-cap Austria international has averaged 3.3 tackles per game in the Bundesliga so far this season, and his tenacity would have added a much-needed spark in the Reds’ midfield. For context, Fabinho leads the tackling charts at Anfield in 2022/23 with an average of two per game.

As it is, they have Arthur instead, in what is a transfer which feels like it could go either way based on his enigmatic time in Turin, with the Brazilian either excelling and earning a permanent move or being shipped off next summer after an underwhelming spell.
