Liverpool are reportedly interested in making a surprise move for Chelsea and England star Mason Mount, according to journalist Jacob Steinberg.

The Lowdown: Mount stars for club and country

The 23-year-old has matured into a formidable footballer in recent years, turning himself into a key figure for both club and country.

Mount has now scored 32 goals and registered 37 assists in 181 appearances for Chelsea, along with winning 32 caps for England, reaching the final of Euro 2020 last year.

With the midfielder's current Blues deal expiring in 2024, however, there is some doubt over his future at Stamford Bridge.

The Latest: Liverpool monitoring Mount's situation

According to Steinberg on Twitter, Liverpool and Juventus are 'tracking' Mount's situation, with his report for The Guardian stating that there is 'growing uncertainly' surrounding him currently.

The journalist tweeted a link to that report, stating:

"Liverpool and Juventus tracking Mason Mount with Chelsea contract talks on hold."

The Verdict: Hard to see it happening

Mount could be a superb prospective signing for Liverpool - Joe Cole has described him as 'unbelievable' - capable of taking up the right-sided central midfield position and also thriving as a number 10 for Chelsea.

His aforementioned end product is already highly impressive at the age of just 23 and he appears to possess a level of tactical intelligence and fitness which would surely appeal to Jurgen Klopp.

That being said, it seems very unlikely that Chelsea would ever allow Mount to join Liverpool, with the likelihood being that he will ultimately extend his stay in west London, given his attachment to the Stamford Bridge club.
