Liverpool: Mohamed Salah could be handed exciting new role

Liverpool: Mohamed Salah could be handed exciting new role -Follow up

Jurgen Klopp could use Mohamed Salah in a central role for Liverpool against Manchester City this weekend, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Huge game for Reds

The Reds picked up a hugely impressive 7-1 win away to Rangers in the Champions League in midweek, in what was a welcome return to form.

Next up is a far greater test for Klopp’s side, however, as Premier League champions City make the trip to Anfield for a Sunday afternoon showdown.

The hope is that Salah will be buzzing after his record-breaking hat-trick at Ibrox, where he was used noticeably more centrally from the substitutes’ bench.

The Latest: Salah at striker?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones said the Egyptian King should again be deployed in that role against City:

“I think there’s got to be a consideration to move Salah more central.

“Do you put him in a position whereby he’s going to get more goalscoring opportunities, improve his confidence and try to get the team going that way?”

The 30 year-old’s numbers as a centre-forward show he is absolutely lethal, recording 33 goals and 11 assists in just 39 appearances up front throughout his career.

The Verdict: Makes complete sense

For too much of this season, Salah has clearly been used wider than usual, with a tactical change seeing Trent Alexander-Arnold push further up the pitch, often both stacked together on the right-hand side.

This change seems to have affected the form of both players and we saw firsthand what Salah is capable of when he is more involved and nearer the goal at Rangers.

He is simply too devastating a goalscorer to have on the periphery of matches, so Klopp has to consider playing Salah and Darwin Nunez alongside each other in a two-man attack on Sunday, or at least tweak his right-wing role if Diogo Jota or Roberto Firmino need to be incorporated, too.
