Liverpool: Naby Keita backed for potential contract extension

Liverpool: Naby Keita backed for potential contract extension -Liverpool News

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita could sign a one-year extension on his current Reds deal, an action that former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged the club to consider.

The Lowdown: Keita into final year of contract

The 27-year-old arrived on Merseyside in 2018 after agreeing a move from RB Leipzig the previous year, but his time at Anfield has been hit-and-miss to date.

Keita is now into the final year of his current Liverpool contract and he has not yet agreed to sign an extension, meaning his future is very much up in the air.

It remains to be seen what will happen, although the Guinean’s latest injury absence certainly doesn’t help his plight.

The Latest: Robinson urges new deal for Keita

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson said he could envisage Keita extending his stay at Liverpool for another year, with keeping hold of him preferable for the Reds.

The Sky Sports pundit has even urged the club to give strong consideration to awarding the 27-year-old a new deal, stating:

“A lot will depend on his injury record this season. I don’t think a year extension is out of the question. He was good for the majority of last season.

“They let Wijnaldum leave too quickly and that did not work out from the club or player’s point of view. I imagine they regret not giving him that contract extension.

“If they can get Keita back fit and back in the team it might be worth giving him another year just to see if he can prove his fitness.

“It is an area that Liverpool are light in. They need a few bodies in that area. They already need another two and that’s without losing Keita.”

The Verdict: Tough call for Klopp

Keita has been such a divisive player during his time at Liverpool, with some championing his direct, aggressive style but others feeling he has not come close to living up to expectations.

It’s not the midfielder’s quality which is generally in doubt – Virgil van Dijk has called him ‘world-class’ in the past – but his constant injury problems have proven to be hugely frustrating, with Jurgen Klopp unable to rely on him for long periods.

Giving him an extra year could make sense, especially given Liverpool’s current midfield issues and the fact that James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Thiago are all into their 30s, but another long-term deal for the enigmatic Guinean would make no real sense.
