Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will be ‘asking’ FSG to hand Roberto Firmino a new deal at Anfield, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Brazilian’s contract with the Premier League giants is set to expire next summer, and his future is currently up in the air after being linked with a move away.

Atletico Madrid are believed to be interested in landing the 31-year-old on a free transfer at the end of the season, with any potential suitors able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement from January onwards.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke claimed that Klopp will want Firmino to stay at Liverpool, and could ask the owners to begin talks over fresh terms.

“We know Jurgen Klopp is a huge fan and admirer of Roberto Firmino as well, so I'm sure he will be asking FSG to sit down and discuss a new deal with Bobby Firmino because they are pretty short upfront as it is.

"So I'm sure they wouldn’t want to see Firmino leave on a free transfer next summer as well.”

The Verdict: New contract deserved

Firmino isn’t getting any younger, but he’s proven the massive impact he can still have on the starting XI which is why a new contract would be fully deserved.

The ‘exceptional’ forward, as billed by journalist Josh Bunting, has made 184 goal contributions during his time on Merseyside, with nine of those coming in ten league appearances this season, making him the club’s second-highest scorer.

With Atletico sniffing around, Liverpool will have to act fast if they want to secure Firmino’s long-term services or risk losing him for nothing in 2023.
