Liverpool should’ve signed a midfielder in the January transfer window to replace Fabinho, according to pundit John Wenham.

The Lowdown: Liverpool struggles

Jurgen Klopp’s side have struggled this season with them well off the pace to where they have been in previous Premier League campaigns, currently sitting 10th and 10 points off the top four.

With the Reds out of both domestic cups, the Champions League is the only chance of silverware they have still up for grabs this season, but they face the current European champions Real Madrid in a repeat of last season’s final, making that task even tougher.

However, the prime opportunity they had to potentially turn the corner this season was through buying big players in the winter window - but the only arrival was forward Cody Gakpo.

The Latest: Wenham’s comments

Liverpool’s avoidance of bringing in a fresh face in midfield is something that Wenham can’t understand given Fabinho’s struggles this season, with the Brazilian left out the Reds side entirely for their trip to Molineux.

Speaking to Football Insider, Wenham said: “Liverpool needed a midfielder.

“This idea that they will be relying on Naby Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain. These players aren’t good enough for Liverpool.

“Fabinho has fallen off a cliff in terms of his form. He was outstanding before but now he looks hopeless. He is a Titanic in the middle of the park, slow, cumbersome, getting in the way.

“He should have got a red card very early in that FA Cup game [v Brighton]. I don’t know what’s happened to him.”

The Verdict: Midfield woes

Despite featuring in 29 games so far this season for Liverpool, Fabinho has fallen well below the levels we’ve come to expect, with him described as “out-of-gas” by Sachin Nakrani back in November and he’s still yet to get back on track.

Klopp has since begun to call on 18-year-old Stefan Bajcetic to play over the Brazilian, with the Spaniard starting in the 0-0 draw against Chelsea after the Reds had previously conceded six in the two games prior without him.

Bajcetic impressed Klopp enough to keep him in the side from the off against Wolves as well, meaning time could be running out for Fabinho to turn around what is becoming a crisis rather than a dip for the 29-year-old given how long he’s been out of touch for.

Indeed, it was not too long ago he had pundits raving over his performances at Anfield.

And with midfield reinforcements almost certain to arrive given four centre-midfielders are set to be out of contract this summer (Transfermarkt), Fabinho must get back to his best soon for both his and Liverpool's sake.
