Liverpool: Journalist labels Koopmeiners as 'one to watch' - Liverpool News

Journalist Theo Squires has labelled Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners as ‘one to watch’ for Liverpool in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Klopp has ‘watched’ Dutchman in recent months

A report from iNews stated that Jurgen Klopp’s side had ‘watched’ the Netherlands international in recent months, with the hope they can bring him to the Premier League.

The 24-year-old featured at the World Cup and provided the assist for their late equaliser against Argentina.

The Latest: Squires says that Koopmeiners is ‘one to watch’ for the Reds

Speaking on the Blood Red podcast, Squires raved about the midfielder and called him ‘one of the best players in Serie A’. Furthermore he believes that Koopmeiners is ‘one to watch’ in the back end of the January window.

He stated: “He does offer a decent overall package in the terms of, he can play as a No 6, he can play as a No 8 and he can play as a centre-back.

“And Liverpool just so happen to be in need of another player who can play as a No 8, an alternative to Fabinho at No 6, potentially another centre-back cover when you’ve got Van Dijk getting his hamstring injury – he’s been one of the best players in Serie A so far this season.

“I wouldn’t put my money on it just yet, but maybe one to keep an eye on if Liverpool do make a move towards the end of the month, we’ll see.”

The Verdict: Liverpool need to bolster their midfield options

Koopmeiners is definitely an option Liverpool should consider for their midfield, as he’s one of the best creative forces in Europe at present.

In the past year, he ranks in the top 7% for shot-creating actions and in the top 14% for total shots in Europe’s top competitions (FBref).

For Atalanta this season, he has six goal contributions from 16 Serie A matches and boasts an average match rating of 7.13 on Sofascore. When compared to his teammates, the midfielder has the third-highest rating of any player in the squad.

If the Reds can get a decent price for the Dutchman in the transfer window, they should look to bring him to Anfield this month.

An injection of quality into the midfield could aid Liverpool’s push for a top-four finish with the Reds currently seven points off fourth place.
