Manchester United forward Anthony Martial will miss his side's upcoming Premier League clash with Southampton through injury, it has been confirmed.

The Lowdown: United head to Saints

Erik ten Hag's side are still bouncing after their 2-1 win at home to Liverpool on Monday night, as the players produced a huge response to their poor start to the season.

Next up for United is Saturday's trip to St Mary's to take on Southampton, with victory further suggesting that the Red Devils have turned a corner.

Martial registered an assist for Marcus Rashford's goal against Liverpool and there were some who felt the Frenchman would start at Saints this weekend.

The Latest: Martial misses out

Sadly, another injury setback has put paid to that, with Martial ruled out with an achilles issue, as confirmed by journalist Samuel Luckhurt on Twitter:

"Ten Hag says Anthony Martial is out for #mufc due to an Achilles injury."

The Verdict: Such a frustrating career

This is a big setback for both United and Martial himself, with the 27-year-old seemingly incapable of staying fully fit for an extended period of time over the years.

The France international's quality hasn't often been questioned - he has been described as 'world-class' by Robin van Persie - but fitness issues continue to plague him and it is hard to keep relying on him as a strong squad player.

Saturday would have been a great chance to start Martial down the left flank, with all due respect to Anthony Elanga, but instead he looks set for another spell on the sidelines. His current United deal expires in 2024 and you just wonder if they could consider selling him in the next 12 months.
