As per Le10 Sport, Liverpool have made contact with PSG defender Thomas Meunier in regards to a potential free transfer.
The 28-year-old’s contract runs out at the end of this campaign, which would leave him free to join another club without the need for a transfer fee.
They say that Jurgen Klopp has already made contact with the Belgium international, who is also wanted by Borussia Dortmund and Napoli.
In terms of the right-back position at Anfield, Trent Alexander-Arnold has it on lockdown. The 21-year-old is arguably the best on the planet in his position – the most recent Ballon d’Or rankings indicated as much. He is the Reds’ creative force from right-back, racking up 16 assists last season as well as 14 this time around – in either campaign, not one of his teammates has managed more.
Such is his importance, his absence has been particularly felt in the past. During the 2018/19 season, he missed two Champions League games, both of which the Reds lost, whilst of the nine Premier League matches in which he didn’t play, the Reds drew four, dropping eight points – they only failed to win eight league matches across the whole campaign, and ended up finishing one point behind Manchester City at the top of the table.
Would you like to sign Meunier?
Effectively, his absence is one of the reasons he did not lift the Premier League last term, primarily because they did not have a good-enough replacement. Bringing in Meunier would change that. He has made 128 appearances for the Ligue 1 champions, scoring 13 times and providing 21 assists, whilst he has also scored seven times in 40 matches for Belgium. Currently valued at £21.6m by Transfermarkt, he could solve one of Jurgen Klopp’s problems in the future and become the ideal back-up option for Alexander-Arnold, offering attacking impetus in the Englishman’s absence.
