According to Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Liverpool are said to be the “main protagonists” along with Real Madrid in the race to sign Lyon’s Houssem Aouar.
The Italian outlet say that Juventus had been in pole position, but they wanted to take him on loan at first for two years with an obligation to buy, which has played into the Reds’ hands.
As such, it is now the European champions and Los Merengues who are at the forefront of the race. It is believed Les Gones are looking for €50m (£44.9m).
Aouar is a massively sought-after talent across Europe, and it is not hard to see why. The U21 France international has already made 133 appearances for Lyon at the age of 21, scoring 24 goals and providing 24 assists during that time. He has managed nine goals this term, which is as many as Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho combined.
Would you like Aouar at Liverpool?
His talent is clear to see, and as Liverpool look stay on top of English football and at the top table on the continent, they must look to the up-and-coming players to strengthen their side. Henderson and Wijnaldum are both approaching 30 years old – they do not have too long left at their peak.
As such, Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards must look to the future. Should they sign Aouar, they would be set up in the middle of the park for years to come.
