Don Hutchinson has said that Kai Havertz would be the perfect fit for Liverpool.
The 20-year-old German has been linked with a move away from current club Bayer Leverkusen over the last year (Bild via This is Anfield) and in the past few weeks he has shown exactly why there is so much interest in his services.
There has been plenty of focus on the Bundesliga in recent days as it became the first major European league to recommence after the coronavirus pandemic and the £72.9m-valued ace – as per Transfermarkt – has revelled under that scrutiny, scoring four goals in two matches.
Hutchinson was speaking to ESPN about the youngster and he said:
“The one player I would liken him to is a taller, faster version of Mesut Ozil. I think he plays off the left-hand side, through the middle, he’s predominantly left-footed, he’s very silky, easy on the eye.
“So again, yes Liverpool would be a great fit, but even Barca rate him that highly they are willing to trade three players for him.”
It is not just in the past few games that Havertz has impressed – he has been delighting Bayer Leverkusen fans for the last two seasons. Last term, he scored 20 goals in all competitions for Die Werkself, including 17 in the Bundesliga, and he already has 14 to his name this time around, 10 of which have been in the league.
Would you like to sign Kai Havertz?
However, it is hard to see how he fits into Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI. His last two impressive performances have come at centre-forward but he is usually an attacking midfielder – a position which Klopp generally doesn’t use. Fitting Havertz into the team and getting the best out of him would likely require the Reds to change formation and, given that they have 25-point lead at the top of the Premier League this term, there is little indication that they should change what has clearly worked well so far.
Wherever Havertz goes next, he has the ability to set the world alight – but there may be more suitable teams than Liverpool for his qualities.
