According to Goal.com, Manchester United are said to be looking at Liverpool target Timo Werner as they look to replace Odion Ighalo.
The Nigeria international joined the Red Devils on loan January, and did well in the short amount of time he spent there, scoring four goals in eight matches.
The Old Trafford outfit were said to be open to signing him permanently at the end of his Shanghai Shenhua contract, but the Chinese club now see him as an important part of their side moving forward, which has led them to offer the 30-year-old a three-and-a-half year contract worth £400,000 a week. As such, United are exploring other avenues, with Timo Werner amongst them.
Liverpool have been linked with a move for Werner for months (Bild via Metro), with Jurgen Klopp even said to have held a virtual meeting with the 24-year-old (Raphael Honigstein via The Daily Express), but as of yet, no deal has been agreed. That leaves the door open to other clubs to make their move, and United could be a real player.
Do you want Werner at Anfield?
One of the issues at Anfield for Werner is a potential lack of playing time, with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah taking up the usual starting spots as part of Klopp’s front free. At United, there would be plenty more guarantees that he would feature from the start on a regular basis, you would imagine.
United may be considerably behind the Reds in the table in fifth place in the Premier League, but they are still a major player when it comes to the transfer market. Their pursuit of Werner could throw a spanner into the works for Michael Edwards and co.
