Former Premier League defender Alan Hutton believes Liverpool have got a severe predicament on their hands following the injury for Alisson Becker.
Alisson leaves Reds at risk
The Brazilian shot-stopper has been ruled out for up to six weeks due to a shoulder injury that he picked up in training, which saw the Reds’ second-choice keeper Adrian step into the fold.
Despite having a great start to his Liverpool career, the former West Ham man has been heavily criticised, particularly during his involvement in their shocking 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa before the international break.
Should Liverpool keep or sell Adrian?
While many Reds fans were unhappy, manager Jurgen Klopp has not yet made any moves in the transfer market, with the domestic window due to close on October 16th.
Taking all of the above into account, Hutton believes that the Reds have a problem that needs to be urgently rectified.
“Looking at the Liverpool team from the outside, you would say missing the goalkeeper or van Dijk, they’re massive parts of what Liverpool want to do”, he told Football Insider.
“It’s massive shoes to fill and it’s a problem. Alisson’s a fantastic goalkeeper with his feet, shot-stopping, just all round so they’re massive shoes to fill.”
A headache Klopp doesn’t want
In recent years, Klopp has had those sort of proverbial managerial headaches that all managers want, spoilt for choices in terms of who to play and in what position.
However, after such a good start to the season, the Anfield icon is now facing his first serious issue of the season with only youngster Caoimhín Kelleher to turn to if Adrian has any more disasters.
As the Reds continue their pursuit of recapturing the Premier League title, the German tactician cannot afford to have any absences from key players, and this isn’t the first time Alisson has been injured for an extended period, missing 11 games at the start of last season.
Because of this, Hutton is right. It would not do the club any harm to look for another shot-stopper to fill Alisson’s boots, even if it is an experienced Championship player with simply a safer pair of hands than Adrian.
