Last chance saloon for Adrian
The 33-year-old has come under intense scrutiny before and during the international break after his side’s shocking 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park last time out, with league leaders Everton next on the horizon for the Reds.
With their first-choice keeper Alisson Becker ruled out for up to six weeks, reports have linked the Reds with Stoke City’s Jack Butland, who has been zoned out of the Potters’ first-team squad this season.
Should Liverpool replace Adrian with Jack Butland?
There are better keepers out there...
Despite the situation that the Merseysiders find themselves in, not everyone is in favour of Klopp moving to change his squad around with just days to go until the domestic transfer window closes, one of them being Mills himself.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “He’s done well in the past for them, it shouldn’t have been a huge issue and if you bring in a goalkeeper now does that kill him immediately?
“Do you write him off? And go ‘that’s him out of it. It’s a tough call to just go ‘right, that’s it, we’re binning him’.
“How does he then feel as a player? ‘Right, that’s me done and dusted because when Allison comes back in I’m third choice.’
“I think they’ll stick with him. Let’s be honest, some of the Liverpool defenders were not great in that performance so they also need to have a good look at themselves. I think Klopp will give it two or three games for them to redress the balance.”
Mills went on to use the comparison with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk, stating that Liverpool would not be as knee-jerk if it was concerning either of these players. However, he warned that any more mistakes from Adrian may cause him an issue.
Wise words from Mills
Although it may be difficult for some to agree with what Mills says, he is talking perfect sense. It would be incredibly knee-jerk for Klopp to make a decision such as this.
The 6 foot 2 Spaniard had a great start to his Anfield career and it is important that this is not forgotten. He was the hero in the UEFA Super Cup final and did a fine job last season after Alisson picked up an injury during the first game of the season against Norwich City.
Granted, Adrian has made some crucial mistakes which have cost the Reds dearly, but he must have the opportunity to right those wrongs.
With just two days to go until the transfer window slams its doors shut, time will provide the answer as to what Klopp will do.
