Former Premier League striker Darren Bent believes that Brentford goalkeeper David Raya would be a good replacement for Liverpool‘s Adrian.
Liverpool’s goalkeeping conundrum
Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice shot-stopper Alisson Becker is currently sidelined for up to six weeks after picking up a shoulder injury in training and was absent for his side’s miserable 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa.
Adrian stepped in his shoes and received intense scrutiny from the supporters after the full-time whistle after making a serious of errors during the 90 minutes.
This left manager Jurgen Klopp with the sort of headache that no boss wants, with the domestic deadline for transfers due to close on October 16th.
Should Liverpool look to sign David Raya?
With Stoke City’s Jack Butland reported as a possible target for the Merseysiders, Bent has offered up his suggestion as to how Liverpool can rectify this key problem with big games on the horizon for them.
He told Football Insider: “For me, I think it is an issue that they need to address. But where can you find a backup goalkeeper now?”
“We are talking about the Premier League champions so it shouldn’t be that hard but where do you get a goalkeeper that is going to be happy coming into the team to play for six weeks until Allison comes back and then you’re back on the bench.
“It has to be a concern because they have seen firsthand what happens when you don’t have an adequate backup goalkeeper.
“The only one who I can think of as a potentially good back up goalkeeper is David Raya, maybe him.
Long way down from the top
With the £3.6m-rated Raya having spent the majority of his professional career in the lower leagues, it could be a lonely place for him if he doesn’t get up to speed straight away. That being said, the Spanish Championship goalkeeper has kept 17 clean sheets from 51 appearances for the Bees, as per TransferMarkt.
Liverpool have had some pretty poor backup keepers over the years, failing to find sufficient quality for their number one choice.
This is a feeling that the Kop faithful will carry whoever Klopp opts to bring in, with the fans losing faith rapidly in Adrian and his ability.
Then again, the German tactician may opt to stick with the Spaniard for now. As far as Raya is concerned, it is a bit of a wild choice from Bent but football is a funny old game where anything can happen.
