Leizpig already planning for Upamecano’s departure
The 21-year-old is a highly-regarded centre-back playing his football in the German Bundesliga after making the move from RB Salzburg in 2017 for £9m.
Upamecano has been described as one of the league’s ‘stars of tomorrow’ and former Premier League midfielder Jermaine Jenas hailed his defensive marking of Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa during their Champions League clash last season.
Should Liverpool try to sign Dayot Upamecano?
However, with the likes of Timo Werner leaving the Bundesliga club to move to England, the France international could follow him next summer.
According to Sport Bild (via Sport Witness), Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United have been named as interested outfits in the centre-back’s services, who could be available for a ‘bargain’ £36.4m.
Such is the expectation for him to leave that Leipzig have reportedly already begun planning for his departure, suggesting that signing Josko Gvardiol from Dinamo Zagreb next summer is ‘probably as a replacement’ for Upamecano.
Upamecano’s potential impact at Liverpool
It would be a fantastic signing if Liverpool were to bring in Upamecano. As it stands, they appear to be in a stronger position than the Manchester duo to capture the Frenchman.
As the ‘defensive jewel‘ continues to perform well domestically and continentally, it could throw the Anfield futures of both Joe Gomez and Joel Matip into doubt.
That being said, the Reds chose not to replace Dejan Lovren this summer, with Jurgen Klopp happy to place Fabinho in the backline as he did against Chelsea last month.
This one could drag out, with the Citizens continuing to try and improve their defence, and it would be no surprise if there are more suitors for Upamecano before the January transfer window.
